The case for taking AI seriously as a threat to humanity - Makes some good points but fails to mention the biggest risk - humans using ai to build and/or customize humans, then we will enter a recursive ai-human training loop and with our human capacity to self justify, will we even know when we are causing suffering, or will we think that we are helping? Will we all always remember or know about the recursive loop? And with the surveillance/monitoring infrastructure that is being built in recent years by almost all nations around the world, and of course the internet off things, will it even matter if it's running open source, free software or proprietary software...

If copyrights in software worked the same as in film/movies, then you could write a closed source application once, and be the only one to make money from it for life time of the author + 50 years, then it could be open sourced - Feels like two very different dimensions, yet software is used to make films! From a design perspective, the first thing that springs to mind with Universal Credit is the problem of having "all of your eggs in one basket", I would have thought that spreading the system across several very separate government departments would be better, but then again I dunno in a future where AI is everywhere, could be the single point of failure approach might actually be better - if everyone could just trust everyone and stop locking people into things then maybe we wouldn't need a stupid system that everyone hates in the first place
Struggling with universal credit in Hartlepool - I just watched a lot of the BBC videos on Universal Credit, and it's very worrying, I worry even more when I think how AI is going to simultaneously make things better and worse at the same time - such an enormous waste of people's lives

Brexit - I am not a lawyer but this is what the proposed deal looks like to me: (1) Freedom of movement for EU citizens in the UK (2) No freedom of movement for UK citizens in the EU (3) UK is segregated into separate UK-EU customs territory (4) UK pays the EU a lot of money (5) peace in northern Ireland
Brexit - The conclusion document has a summary (p7) of what the backstop is - It covers a lot of things, notably the "Common Travel Area" still applies, freedom of movement for EU citizens, it's not 100% clear to me that UK citizens have the same privilege
Brexit - In case you are interested, the "Backstop" refers to a protocol section of the withdrawal agreement (p300-474, approx 1/3 of the entire document) that includes a series of annex sections (annexes 1-10) - these are the rules, apparently meant to be temporary, to be applied concerning NI after Brexit
Brexit - A link to a Brexit page now appears right at the very bottom right hand corner of the European Commission homepage - Has links to all the negotiation documents if you click through 3 levels deep

If the EU still won't negotiate people need to be made aware that the EU is forcing the UK and Ireland to fight against each other - the EU doesn't appear to see that real people with families live in northern Ireland and have been suffering for many decades - Stop the annexation of northern Ireland just so you can add a tiny bit of land to your continent sized territory
Brexit - "Our UK friends need to say what they want" - List the current rule set, delete the rules you don't want (unsure - delete it), add rules you want, send to Brussels - It does not need to be complicated
Just another kick in the teeth - today the navbar and support ticket system has stopped rendering in Chrome for a hosting provider website I use, renders fine in Firefox but Firefox is being secretly blocked by dodgy firewall software that earlier overwrote firewall rules with an old set of rules corrupting the backups in the process - Hey world, you must immediately cease kicking this independent software developer in the teeth! Sometimes the only action left is to wag your finger at everyone :)
Trump cancels White House Christmas party for the press
Brexit - What it sounds like to me is "EU rules apply in northern Ireland until a deal is struck between the UK and the EU" which means there is literally no incentive for the EU to negotiate anything since they are already happy with "the EU rules"
I'm surprised at how optimistic bitcoin scammers are of regular people's ability to make bitcoin transfers
Sometimes things fail, and it's especially terrible when your backups are corrupt too - in those situations there isn't much else you can do apart from rebuild from memory, the good news is that building something you already did usually takes much less time, but you have to do it as soon as possible while you still remember

I wonder which type of freedom of movement the time traveling pirates would prefer? Their priority is probably getting into the country, then they can blend in relatively easily, so maybe the EU freedom of movement, but then again they are time traveling pirates playing fancy dress, they can blend in anywhere right, so why not just prefer the UK version of freedom of movement? Then all peoples (time traveling pirates & regular peoples) have more equal freedom of movement

In my opinion May should go back to Brussels with a proposal - Norway Plus with true freedom of movement throughout the EU (abolition of all national id cards) or no deal Brexit - sounds a little outrageous, but really it's outrageous that the EU is demanding restriction of movement and calling it freedom
List of national identity card policies by country - This is essentially the freedom of movement world map, note that a lot of the EU is red and hardly any of it is grey
The reality about the EU freedom of movement is that it isn't in practice free movement, you have to register everytime you move, everyone is tracked
If the EU is really serious about freedom of movement then it shouldn't be a big deal to insist on the abolition of id cards in all member countries
Brexit - What is the Norway model? (In practice, how even is the freedom of movement throughout the EU? For example in the UK there are no ID cards, straight away that's an enormous difference)
